What is a Wedding Celebrant?

A wedding celebrant is someone who works with couples who wish to personalise their wedding ceremony by creating a bespoke script that celebrates their individuality and resonates with them and their wedding guests.

There are predominantly two types of celebrant; Humanist Celebrants and Independent Celebrants

A Humanist celebrant provides an alternative to a traditional wedding ceremony for couples wishing to celebrate their marriage in a completely non-religious way.

An Independent celebrant offers couples the freedom and flexibility to tailor every aspect of their wedding ceremony, e.g. the exchange of vows, promises, declarations and rings and will gladly include any prayers, bible readings, hymns or symbolic rituals which are reflective of the couple’s culture, beliefs or faith.

As an Independent Celebrant, I create and deliver wedding ceremonies with absolutely no restrictions whatsoever in terms of;

Content

Although under current legislation, a celebrant led ceremony is not legally binding, unlike a civil wedding ceremony delivered by a Registrar or a wedding ceremony in a religious context, there is no set script.

Location

At present, with very few exceptions, for a marriage to be recognised legally in the UK, the wedding ceremony has to take place either in a place of worship or at a licensed venue.  Although under current legislation, a celebrant led ceremony is not legally binding, it can take place anywhere.

Timing

Whilst it is perfectly possible to plan a wedding ceremony at any time during the day or night, it may be difficult to find a Registrar or religious minister who will perform marriages during anti-social hours.

I will gladly conduct a ceremony for you in accordance with your timeline. At any time to suit you.

Whilst the duration of a civil or religious wedding ceremony is usually dictated by the length of a pre-formulated script, the length of a celebrant led ceremony is determined purely by the specific content you wish to include.  There are no time limits. It can be as brief or as comprehensive as you wish.

A wedding celebrant will invest time in getting to know you

Each wedding ceremony written and delivered by a wedding celebrant will be unique and takes a while to plan and create. Ultimately, it calls for collaboration between the celebrant and the couple.

Unlike a Registrar or religious minister, a wedding celebrant spends an unlimited amount of time with each couple, finding out about you, your personalities and style, your values, what you enjoy and what is important to you.

The initial conversation with your celebrant can trigger a lot of happy memories. It is a lot of fun and more often than not, there is a lot of laughter as you recall certain elements of your love story. Sometimes, as memories and feelings are shared, you even find out things about each other you didn’t know before!

When the celebrant has written a first draft of the script covering everything they will say during the ceremony, they will send this to you. You are then welcome to add to it or change any wording as you wish.

When you choose to work with me, I will listen to your ideas, interpret your style and understand your hopes, wishes and desires.  Together, we will captivate and impress your wedding guests with a ceremony quite unlike anything they have ever witnessed before.

It is the way I write and tell your love story that sets me apart from other celebrants. It will make you blush, smile, laugh and cry. I guarantee that afterwards, your guests will tell you that YOUR wedding ceremony was the BEST they have ever seen. It will be incredible! Moving! Entertaining!
